A self-taught master shipwright renown for artistry and innovation, John Bartlum launched Key West’s shipwright industry in the 1830’s. Like a character ripped from the pages of a Hemingway novel, Bartlum was a true man of the sea who unknowingly wrote a pivotal chapter in Key West’s history. His dedication to shipbuilding, to living a life of passion and creation, is embedded in the very fibers of Key West as seamlessly as salt weaves into the ocean.
